It all started when a friend of mine said ‘I just want to feel stronger’
There are plenty of well documented reasons why women need resistance training in their life, but I kept hearing reasons why women weren’t engaging in this type of activity. Lack of time, or lack of confidence, no enjoyment from training in a general gym environment, and losing motivation from exercising alone are just a few.
Bodywell Active provides a space where women of all ages and ability can join in and learn how to lift weight safely, under the guidance of a physiotherapist. Our style of training is functional strength training, working to build strength for you to perform everyday activities more efficiently. Classes are 45 minutes long and use a variety of equipment such as bars, dumbbells, ropes and pulleys, resistance bands and weighted balls and bags.
Beginner Strong Girls are introduced to the club through a Fundamentals class. This class performs all the same movements but they are modified to suit individuals until confidence and skill level grows. If you already have experience with weights training we can screen you first to ensure we find the right class for you.
What are those reasons for women to engage in resistance training?
Menopause and Changing Hormones: among the many symptoms brought about by changing hormones we have bone loss, decreased muscle strength and joint pain - exercise can have a positive physical impact on these changes as well as serve our overall wellbeing
Bone Health: alongside age and hormonal changes there can be found a reduction in bone density, but then add postural changes, a sedentary lifestyle and diet related challenges…… we need to work hard to prevent further bone loss. Resistance exercise is integral to bone strengthening and remodelling
Functional Strength: the more we practice a movement, the easier it becomes due to neuromuscular adaptation. The same is true for exercise as anything else we are trying to become better at in life. Consistency is key but practising the right movements and sequences make us more dynamic and resilient, lessening the chance of injury, falls and overloading our body systems.
