Clinical Pilates

Pilates is now a strong contender as one of the most popular forms of exercise for those wanting to improve core and postural strength. With Pilates being so accessible now, how do you decide which class style is best for you, or whether a 1:1 session would be more suitable?

Bodywell Active offers a specific Pilates framework called Clinical Pilates, delivered as mat classes and 1:1 sessions — setting us apart from the more generic approach of “fitness” Pilates. Clinical Pilates is a dynamic exercise method developed specifically by physiotherapists as a tool for recognising poor movement patterns, core control issues, and painful spinal conditions. The depth and scope of Clinical Pilates is grounded in evidence that’s continually developing from joint and spinal stability research.

Alongside a class or 1:1 option, your Clinical Pilates practice may also form part of your physiotherapy treatment and management plan. It draws on physiotherapy skills from the initial assessment and injury history evaluation through to the design of an individualised programme suited to you and specific to your condition. Pilates can also be adopted as a home exercise programme, monitored and progressed at regular intervals.

The focus of Clinical Pilates is to build functional stability and muscle control, rather than pure strength — promoting efficient movement and reducing pain and injury. With this in mind, it’s best suited to small groups, so your individual needs can be monitored throughout the session. Class sizes are capped at 9 people, allowing us to monitor you more closely.
